Ovarian cancer is the biggest killer amongst all of the female cancers. Nearly 80% of those treated for ovarian cancer will experience a recurrence. The chances of death within the first five years of treatment is nearly 50%, no matter if it is stage 2,3, or 4. These grim statistics are now a reality for my own life. I am an ovarian cancer survivor. One reason ovarian cancer is so deadly is because it is very difficult to detect. Often, by the time it is diagnosed, the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. There is no reliable screening for ovarian cancer like there is for breast cancer and cervical cancer. Ovarian cancer is named after the development of cancerous tissues/ cells in ovaries (an organ that is found in women and is an important part of the female reproductive system). Like any type of cancer, the thought of ovarian cancer is very frightful for every woman. If ovarian cancer is not detected in its initial stages, it can really become life threatening. In some cases, ovarian cancer can lead to removal of ovaries. Symptoms of cervical cancer The most common symptoms of cervical cancer include pelvic pain or pain during intercourse, unexpected vaginal discharge or bleeding, increase in the frequency of urination etc. However, the occurrence of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily imply cervical cancer. These symptoms just suggest that cervical cancer could be a possibility and hence point to the need of undergoing other cervical cancer tests Risk Of Uterine Cancer The spread of cancer means metastasis. When uterine cancer spreads outside the uterus, cancer cells are often found in nearby lymph nodes, nerves, or blood vessels. If the cancer reached the lymph nodes, cancer cells may have spread to other lymph nodes and other organs, such as the liver, lungs and bones. When cancer spreads from its original place to another part of the body, the new tumor has the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the primary tumor. Reducing Ovarian Cancer Risks Through Diet Most cancer research and even the American Cancer Society do suggest eating an assortment of healthy foods. Diets, which are high in vegetables are recommended by nearly all studies and researchers. Those woman who eat five helpings of fruits and vegetables each day seem to reduce their risks of all cancers by 50% and ovarian cancer is included in those reduced risks. Also recommended is whole grain type foods; beans, pasta, rice and some types of cereal. There is still some debate on how much these foods reduce ovarian cancer, however no one has suggested that they would cause ovarian cancer or hurt you in anyway. In fact the proof that vegetables do not prevent or reduce ovarian cancer is not even available, yet there is some question as to whether research in this area of research on ovarian cancer have enough data to be conclusive. Ovarian Cancer Mortality Rate The mortality rate for ovarian cancer patients is not very good. This is largely due to the trouble of diagnosing. Ovarian cancer can only be diagnosed for certain, with invasive surgery. Unfortunately, most patients with ovarian cancer are not diagnosed until the disease is advanced. This involves spreading of the disease to the upper abdomen. Thus, it becomes very late to carry out operative as well as radiation treatments on the patients. If the disease is detected in the early stages, it is curable in a number of patients. Ovarian Cancer Prevention Ovarian cancer risks can be reduced. It might be wise to look into some of the research to develop the strategy, which is right for you. Here are a few ideas and thoughts on some of the things you might wish to add to your lifestyle or subtract in order to reduce your risks of ovarian cancer. One way to reduce your risk of ovarian cancer is the use of oral contraceptives or birth control pills. This has been found to reduce the risks of ovarian cancer by up to 50% by those women who use them for up to three or more years.
